Baritone,
conductor and lecturer Sterling Allen is
currently on staff at
A&M United Methodist
Church as Director of Music
Ministries. Sterling holds a Bachelors of
Music from Centenary College of Louisiana
and a MMus in Vocal Performance from the
University of Texas at Austin. He is currently pursuing a
Doctorate of Worship from The Institute for
Worship Studies in Jacksonville, Florida.
While at Centenary, Sterling studied
hymnology, liturgy and church music business
with Dr. Will K. Andress and voice with Dr.
Horace English. At the University of Texas,
Sterling studied voice with Prof. David
Small and Sacred Music with the world famous
Dr. Gerre Hancock.
A very
active performer, Sterling sings repertoire
from all genres, both secular and sacred.
He specializes in the sacred music of the
baroque, classical, and romantic composers.
He also has been noted for his art song
interpretation. This regular of the concert
stage has premiered many works for composers
and is frequently singing pieces composed
especially for him. These new works include
pieces by Andrew Ley, Jack Stamps, and
others.
With equal interest in performing and
teaching, Sterling often is fielding offers
to lecture on music in worship and the
worship music of Taize. He also maintains
an active voice studio with students who
participate in the TMEA All-State Choir
process and UIL Solo and Ensemble
competition. Sterling's students have been
accepted to some of the finest universities
in the country and gone on to major in
music. His conducting experience ranges
from weekly work with adult and youth choirs
to conducting major works and musical
theatre pieces with orchestra. This
repetoire includes Schubert's "Mass in G",
Handel's "Messiah", Vivaldi's "Gloria",
"Your a Good Man Charlie Brown", "Pajama
Game" and others. |
